Editorial Policy

OurHousing exists so that people can share the story of their tenancy and have conversations with Housing Associations and staff that improve services. This editorial policy aims to publish as many of the stories we are told as we possibly can. However, in a few cases we may need to make some changes. Here are the guidelines we use to make sure that this is done sensitively and with minimum change.

Moderation principles

There are four principles, which guide the OurHousing editorial policy:

  • Enable a clear, timely, public, constructive conversation about tenancies.
  • Safeguard participants and their right to privacy.
  • Encourage authentic feedback, based in personal experience.
  • Tolerate only civil and tasteful contributions.

These principles guide the decisions made by editors. There are guidelines that come from these principles, which help our moderators to decide if and how they should edit a story.

Enable a clear, timely, public, constructive conversation about care

To ensure the conversation is constructive, we will:

  • Reject postings which are primarily commercial, obscene or irrelevant.
  • Reject postings relating to events which ended over three years ago.
  • Remove obscene or offensive language, including racist, sexist, homophobic or other discriminatory material.
  • We may limit the length of stories, by heavily editing extremely long postings.

To ensure the conversation is clear, we will:

  • Consider changes to the story title to make it more helpful to other users.
  • Replace upper case (CAPITALS) text with mixed case.
  • Make minor changes to spelling, punctuation or layout to improve readability.

Safeguard participants and their right to privacy.

To avoid identifying or the defamation of individuals, we will:

  • Remove all names from postings, even from positive postings.
  • Remove details which might identify an individual, particularly where we suspect there are small numbers of staff in any one service.
  • Remove mention of specific dates and times.
  • We will not publish postings if we become aware it could potentially prejudice any ongoing proceedings, whether they are complaints, claims, police coroner, or any other proceedings or investigation.
  • If we are concerned that the author of a posting may be vulnerable, we will take appropriate action to protect that person. This may include signposting the person to an appropriate agency for support, not publishing the postings or, in the most serious cases, we may contact the appropriate authority.

Encourage authentic feedback, based in personal experience

To avoid generalisation and speculation in postings, we will:

  • Make sure that postings directly report the experiences, reactions or suggestions of tenants.
  • Generally remove suggestions that indicate others should not visit a service, e.g. ‘Nobody should rent from Henderson Housing’, as this is a generalisation based on one individual’s experience.
  • Remove allegations or speculations about the character or motivations of housing association staff or organisations, since authors do not know what motivates particular staff. For example, ‘I wonder why the government pays these providers’; ‘the managers were only motivated by money’.
  • Edit to make clear that experiences relate to some staff, not all staff. For example, change ‘all the staff at Henderson Housing were lazy’ to ‘all the staff who answered my call at Henderson Housing were lazy’.
  • Sometimes remove references to the experience of other tenants. For example, ‘they gave the lady across the way the wrong windows’. This is because the story should primarily relate to the direct experience of care by the tenant themselves.
  • Sometimes edit direct speech, quoting third parties, to indirect speech. For example, ‘the landlord said “you’re a nightmare tenant and we don’t want to look after you”’ to, ‘the landlord said that I was a nightmare tenant and they didn’t want to look after me’.

Tolerate only civil and tasteful contributions.

Wherever possible, and within our gift of insight, we will remove any prohibited contributions such as:-

  • profanity or obscenities or any kind, even disguised with asterisks.
    personal attacks on other participants.
  • Defamatory, obscene, indecent, lewd, pornographic, violent, abusive, insulting, threatening and harassing comments are not permitted.
  • Contributions that stray from the discussion topic.
impersonation of other participants or public figures. A user may choose an appropriate nickname as long as a real name is used in the personal information field (which is not publicly visible).
  • advertising or marketing of any kind, including non-profit organisations.
  • Your contributions should be your own original work and not copy anyone else's text or work.
  • No third party copyright material should be posted.
  • oversized fonts, JavaScript, tables, headings or other advanced HTML commands are allowed. Please use only bold or coloured fonts to emphasise your points.
  • Contributions containing languages other than English may be removed
  • inappropriate (e.g. vulgar, offensive etc) user names
